Re: [Avid-L2] USB3 Drives for Editing? Opinions?

I agree with Wilson. As long as your actual drive(s) can provide you enough  bandwidth then USB 3 should be fine for everyday use.

Some controllers and hardware configuration can prevent top end USB 3 performance. For example, the supposed non-native controller in the MacPro 2013 has a total bandwidth of ~450MB/s. Some controllers are even lower. But MBP 2013 can reach up to 700MB/s+.

Alex - you just need to modify your BIOS settings. You are likely configured by default to boot first from USB storage. Move the internal drive above USB devices.

What interface is this? Does it do anything on a computer with built-in
USB 3.0?

I'm working with 3 additional USB 3.0 drives every day without any
problems while editing (mostly DNxHD185).

But...
* I can not boot with all the USB 3.0 drives connected (so I first boot,
and then switch on the power of the external drives)
* the USB 3.0 drives fall asleep after a few minutes, if they are not in
use all the time - which is annoing.
(now I use KeepAliveHD http://tinyurl.com/lw2cwlq which works fine for me)
* of course the USB 3.0 drives are a little bit slower than the internal
raid 0 (2x2tb)

All USB 3.0 drives are connected directly to the USB 3.0 ports of the
comuter.
