Re: [Avid-L2] Favorite tool for rendering outside Avid - now AFF vs. QT reference

I was using AME to watermark and xcode reference QT to vendors, but then AME stopped watermarking the last frame of my clips, rendering it somewhat useless.

Anyone else?

In my experience with QT Ref to QT Pro when I've DNX220 and 220X in a sequence the black filler turns white when I ama back to the resulting file.  I wonder if your black filler was somehow a different bit depth and if that contributed to the white once encoded.  Just a thought.

Hey Dave,

I have been using Adobe Media Encoder for years with Avid exported QT Refs with no serious problems.  I do a lot of 20 - 30 minute videos, so QT ref is a big time saver when making MP4s for review or any other case where I don't need a master quality file.

Several versions ago (CS 5 or 5.5? can't remember), AME wouldn't see or encode the separate audio track in a QT ref, so it was useless then. But that got fixed.

Currently I am on OSX 10.9.2, MC 7.0.4 and Adobe CC 2014 with no problems.

One gotcha though - it seems that anywhere you have filler black in your exported sequence, you will get white in the encoded clip.  Make sure you use imported black instead of filler.

Uh, paging Avid: FCP 7 could generate black media, Premiere Pro lets you generate black media, we are still stuck with filler black in Avid...

John –

I'm trying to facilitate a new collaborative workflow for a customer who has been working with isolated editors.  It's speculative at this point – and I'm left to vagaries of the web.  It just seemed that from what I read on Adobe's website that QT reference was not specifically qualified.  Nice to hear from someone who can actually put the workflow to the test.

I just made a Pro Res QT reference movie, dragged it into Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014 and encoded it to H.264.  Worked fine.  What issue are you having?

Maybe a more of an expert could jump in here, but it looks like Adobe has support for AAF clearly spelled out – not QT reference.

Adobe Media Encoder crashes when I give it a QuickTime Reference.  I've tried various combinations of using network shares and etc, as well as using internal, external, networked drives.

I am using a HP computer and Windows 7.

I would love to find out how to make reference movies work.

Will Adobe Media Encoder take QT reference files?  They are using the new version of Cinema Craft for the actual encoding.
