I'm working on a Lenovo W530 ThinkPad. Been running MC7/Symphony on it for over a year now and I've had a great experience. The only thing I would strongly recommend is getting a docking station to go along with it. Those extra I/Os come in pretty handy for larger projects.
He should also check the Avid approved PC list to see if there is a later model qualified. As I said, my laptop is just over a year old, so I'm sure there is a newer version out by now.
