Even more complicated with 3D as blanking can be added to either eye as floating masks to help the positive parallax issues and frame violations. So you end up with what looks like blanking on either eye and that can appear top bottom or the sides. So with 3D content variable blanking is a tool to help resolve issues with frame violations.
