I just bought a TB drive recently also. No problems with Avid either, Alldrives not necessary.

I wonder if the not seeing the drive initially has something to do with thunderbolt? In my experience setting the alldrives to see everything as media drives will make the drive show up as a possible storage medium. Without that on I get no sign in Avid of those non official Avid drives IIRC. This sounds like once the avidmediafiles folder is on the drive it may show up regardless of the alldrives setting, which has not been my experience in the past. Can you check the console and see if alldrives is on seeing all drives as media drives just for my own curiosity?
