Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Videoguys' Guide (with Video) to Avid Media Composer | Software

One correction to Norm.  There is no maintenance fee for subscription.  The student simply subscribes for $9.99/Mo for as long as they need it.  They receive updates and support with that price. This is a very aggressive price point.

Since I have direct access to our sales, I can tell you we have seen exponential growth in our education market.  We don't reach every school, but our education program is extremely popular.  I mentioned before that we will be even more aggressive in our offerings.  Floating license and subscription are proof points.

Free is not an option right now, but we are very conscious of price points for students.  We don't sell into secondary education markets today (this is in reference to a comment about this earlier) it's why that poster did not see students with Media Composer experience entering college programs.  We're looking into changing this.

We completely get the need to seed the market with talent that's familiar with our products.  It's a no-brainer and I'll say it again that we are going to be even more aggressive with education.

Added perspective from a lurker.

Couldn't agree more with you Gary on the education pricing.  At USC, where I run the editing track, we found a huge jump in the number of students who bought Avid when they changed their policy to sell MC at $295 with four years of free upgrades.  Nearly every editing student I teach walks out with a copy of MC.  And they are committed to it.

As far as I can tell, some of them may switch to the subscription model, but the $99/year maintenance fee for upgrades in the perpetual and subscription models is going to put a dent in that.  Students are THAT price sensitive.

We've been pounding on Avid for years for the floating license, and I'm happy to see that.  We'll continue to teach Avid (it is a big reason why our alums are so employable), and the students will continue to have it on the workstations that we image.  But I expect to see a roll-off in the number of students who buy it for themselves.
