Well when I don't have my sync hum issue I use external reference sync on Avid and the deck and it is proven this is the most stable way to work as long as you know the reference sync is proper and in time. I only reference input video when I don't have control of the sync and system infrastructure. Using input video sync reference makes it more likely to punch a glitch into the tape if the Avid burps on output. Other people work other ways. I know for a fact that external sync in a controlled environment is the best way to work. There have been several threads regarding this in the past. In this particular case the deck has a problem internally that is causing the DT unlock in the middle of an output. It has nothing to do with sync in this particular case. I mearly mentioned that to be specific.
