Hi mark,
In his talk, From Malaparte to the Multiverse: the physics of poetry and the poetry of physics, Walter tied together his interest in Italian author Malaparte to Particle Fever. He explained the process he went through and showed some clips from the film.
It was different than most talks I have gone to since it had a lot pf personal elements.
For example, Walter planned to be an oceanography major. When he found out there was no undergraduate oceanography degree, he switched. There was no film degree either so he started a film club with some friends and had the help of an advisor. He graduated from Hopkins in 1965 and got married two weeks later to his girlfriend, Aggie and they hadn't been back to Hopkins since - almost 49 years.
He was very open and said this in response to s student's question on how he got started. His first job was for Encyclopedia Britannica Films - sweeping floors. He was working on a documentary about human eyes, destined for the high school market, when he got laid off and then got a job doing commercials. He met Francis Coppola (UCLA) and John Lucas (USC) through film school and it was doing sound for Francis on "Rain People" that really got his started.

BTW, if it's not clear from this, Murch edited and did sound design for the new documentary "Particle Fever", which I saw at the Film Forum last week. I can highly recommend this fascinating doc about the CERN labs Large Hadron Collider.
