Having just read that thread (thank you Andi), I'd suggest that anyone seriously using AMA take a look. It will become important to me if/when we move my university systems up to MC7. And as for 'AMA Media Management', as far as I can see, it is a PITA, filling the Media Tool with non-relevant clips that I do not want to see!
These databases get massive really quickly too - and they're on your system drive. Seems like a poor choice for them to live there. I've turned off AMA management as it has no real benefits for me - or anyone for that matter who has a decent media management policy in place. I also found problems in a multi-user environment on mac with permissions were resolved by turning it off. There's a thread on the forums about it:

On Mac, you'll find them in Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer/AMA Management. There will be a folder for every AMA disk you have ever mounted in MC7.x with a .pmr file, an .mdb file and an .aaf file in it.Add that to your troubleshooting list for AMA media problems, if you haven't already. On Sat, Mar 29, 2014 at 9:08 PM, Pete Opotowsky <popix@cfl.rr.com> wrote:Seems like there should be…

No, there is not. If you look where they are stored, there is basically a folder for every AMA volume you have every mounted since you first launched MC 7.
On Mac, it's in User/Shared (I don't remember more than that...not in front of a system now.)

Is there a setting somewhere to tell MC7 where to save the AMA media db files?

Lou,I don't recall if you are working in MC 7 or not.
MC 7 introduced managed AMA media. This is similar to the way media databases are created with traditional avid media. One notable difference is the databases are on the system volume and not the media drive. These databases can get corrupted just like regular media databases can.
You can turn off AMA managed media in the console.

Have you tried renaming the bin at finder level (or what it is called on a PC).
I have also had this issue, in one case it was also a corrupt piece of media.
But I could open the bin when I had offlined my media, and then it was a matter of divide and conquer.
