[Avid-L2] Curious Relink Behavior of Frame Converted Master Clips?

Mac OS 10.6.8 SNDX V. 5.5.4.  On a series I do they have primarily tape with some file based 23.98 cut into a 1080i/59.94 project.  They have added tape names to the file based footage.  For uprez they ama mount the file based media and add the proper tape name then relink what will relink and over cut any footage that doesn't relink.  Then they transcode and convert file based to DNX 220.  Today I was given an updated upper track with some of the file based shots slipped a frame or 2 to properly sync the shots to the reference track.  This was missed in the initial up rez.  Now these are converted and transcoded clips from 23.98 to 59.94 and I know the Avid prompts when doing this that the results will not link back to the original master clips.  Now the newly converted clips have the tape name and time code.  In today's case the new fix sequence will not relink to my media of the same shots yet the tape names and time codes match.  I set the bin display to show reference clips and then I was able to relink the master clips to my media which solved the problem.  My question is why will the master clips relink but not the sequence?  Because these are converted clips is there some under the hood metadata pointer that creates a conflict when relinking a sequence as opposed to relinking the master clips.  Usually it's the master clips that are hard to relink but if you put them in a sequence they will relink.  Today it's just the opposite very curious.  Anybody got a theory?
