It’s important to differentiate between proper tapeless content like P2 XDCAM red etc. which has a UMID and stuff like the 5D and other simple QT content.
If you have content with the UMID then MC can track it and you have robust media management. If you don’t then you have to fall back to unique file names and locations.
Re-wrapping content for various reasons is a classic issue that strips out metadata the editor isn’t bothered with but also risks stripping the UMID.
The dance folks do with the forcing relinks is just that a dance and it more often than not just causes confusion later down the line.
Tapeless workflows aren’t rocket science. Just test the workflow. And then apply it. Don’t re-invent the wheel as the job progresses.
And last of all be prepared for some shots to just not play ball at re-link time. Fact is that just happens. You can spend hours trying to work out why or armed with clip name, source file name and last known path as well as a timecode you can over cut in seconds.
The jobs about the finished product not the mechanics of how it happens.
