I agree with Shane and disagree with Curt to some extent. FCP7 always worked great on a fairly underpowered MBP. When I stepped up to Media Composer 7, the MBP I had was no longer up to the task. EXCEPT that I swapped out my spinning drive and 4Gigs of RAM for 16gigs and an SSD. That TOTALLY made a difference. I think Shane is right that an Air isn't going to hold up to the abuses of a heavier editing load and greater expectations on throughput and the number of streams and necessary "gozzintas and gozzouttas" (input and output). The cost difference isn't that much, and I think the added connectivity and power will be helpful more so than the drawback of the MBP's greater size and weight.
Greg,
I have been on medical bed rest for 8 months now and have been able to continue working using FCP7 on my MB Air and have had zero problems. The work I've been doing lately is 3 to 7-minute marketing/promotional-type videos unfortunately still shot in 16:9 SDCAM, so I'm not sure that taxes the system as much as HD media would, but it has saved my bacon! I have done a few things with ProRes 422 footage and didn't have any troubles. I keep my media on an external drive for editing. For me the only real downer in this temporary fix is real estate. Going from dual monitors on my Mac Pro system at the office to a 13" MBA is a little rough, but certainly manageable. Compression takes more time (therefore patience) but again, it's manageable.FWIW,On Oct 8, 2013, at 10:18 AM, Greg Huson <Greg@SecretHQ.com> wrote:My macpro is just old enough that it's starting to annoy me - mostly the maximum allowable memory of 8gig (I only have 4, but why upgrade if I can't have at least 16?) and the spinning media.
So, rather than upgrade this machine, which I mostly use for email, I'm thinking of selling it and replacing it with an 'air,' since when I DO use it for big files / editing / etc., I'm on an external drive anyway.
Anyone editing on a macbook air? What's that like? Or is there still a real advantage to the macbook pro now?
Any advice appreciated.
