HI Martin,
I don't believe that's what he was talking about. On a two monitor system you can run many MAC apps on one monitor as a full screen app and all your other apps on the second like you describe. The problem is with Avid. There is no full screen Avid mode. Unless you build custom workspaces that remove the gaps between windows, you're always at risk of accidently clicking through to another app. Even if no other apps are running, you click through to the desktop and activate finder. It's a real difficulty for new users especially those used to FCP. Their first question is "how do I get rid of the holes?"
Best Wishes,
Paul

One thing I really like about not having a background is I can have another app open and running in my second monitor. For example, I can have my script or transcripts open in Word and can even type TC into the transcript while a clip is playing in MC. Yeah, my attention is divided, but depending on the circumstances, this can be a real time saver. Typically, my first monitor is completely covered with MC so there's no place to accidentally click out of it.

Something that has always bothered me about macs is the way that programs don't have a background - as in, I can see the desktop behind the various windows of whatever program I'm using. I often find that because I'm an infrequent user, I'll do something like click somewhere in the background, then try a shortcut for the program, but it won't work because the finder is active or something similar.
