Re: [Avid-L2] Re: best dvd quality possible

Now, i ve got my anger management training from a guy named Bob:

AE is one of the worst scalers, depending on taste.
De-interlace is a gotspe for DVD creation.
Why on earth use ProRes as an inbetween format unless you like torture.
The one (let's call him "L" (insert sinister voice here)) who said that full
height anamorph was no way to go should be hanged. (shot first if he's
lucky.)
Compressor sucks. Cinemacraft is good and affordable (If it's still around).
An SDI hardware encoder (Assuming it's the Sonic 2000, best money could buy
back then) is better? Cinemacraft outperformes it.
(Let alone you don't want to do 7 pass encoding in batch on some 20 shows
without having an intern and digibeta you can spare. Nowadays, who cares. In
those days, welll...)
The ones who said that you should use a datarate of 9000 or 8000 has never
made a burned DVD without at least some complaints. It just does not work in
an average player.
(There is a huge difference in duplication and replication.)
CBR is not only good to keep max quality, it's also easier on the players
for 'some' reason. Experience of hunderes of pros on thousands of different
players can't be wrong.

Now, the usual suspects have the right anwers.
Only few things for me to add, do NOT ever use dual layer if you burn, and
for the rest, use good brand discs. Never ever put a sticker on a DVD.
Never use DV as an inbetween if you're in NTSC (4:1:1 vs 4:2:0, it will suck
big time)

Last, the DVD list is DEAD.
DVD's are good as giveaway of productions, as the box can hold lots of
artwork and has some value on a bookshelf, and of course it's easy to put
some bribing money next to the DVD (That's why Ammaray puts the clips inside
the boxes.)
For normal screeners, YouTube is great.
(Yes Frank, Xprove never had a chance...)

Back to meds and Star Trek DS9 (from Bittorrent, DVD rips Uncompressed of
course, nice 4:3, just as i like it on my old CRT)
