Been setting up a new 21 inch iMac and I'm using an external DVD/CD drive from OWC that connects USB 2.0. I've been using this unit with the older iMac circa 2006 after it's internal optical drive died. I'm making disk images of FCP install disks and it's taking upwards of a half hour to create a disk image on the desktop. I'm figuring the FCP install will go smoother off disk images as I've had some issues installing off this external optical drive on the older iMac. Perhaps my previous issues are due to the old iMac is only USB 1. A couple of times I could not install stuff or burn cds from iTunes from the drive. Is there any value in exploring an external optical drive with a USB 3 interface? I would think the drive read/write speeds would be a limiting factor more so than USB 2 vs USB 3 but I'm not getting much info googling relating to transfer speed comparisons. Curious what other's think. I'd even go for the Apple super drive if
it's going to perform better than the current OWC model I have.
