Why not do what I do when I create tutorials so people can see the small stuff easier and use the Accessibility System Preference on the Mac?
(Apple Menu>System Preferences>Accessibility>Zoom).
Toggle the function on. Then use option-Command - plus or minus (-=) to zoom in. Quick and easy and no need to pick up the magnifying glass.
Once you get the hang of this, it really is quite easy to use. It follows your cursor, so just a quick tap to get in and a quick tap to get out. If you need to go closer, hold the buttons down longer.
