Re: [Avid-L2] Espera

Digidelivery didn't pass security muster - the server got hacked at some point and the packets were reportedly not secure. I have one that's never been used on my shelf if you want it - $25 and you pay the shipping. I paid WAY more for it than that!! Digidelivery required a web-based management system to do transfers- that's been shut down so I don't believe there are any digidelivery systems still in use. Aspera offered a deal to 'upgrade' to their point-to-point system.

Aspera is overly expensive, but has the brand name and sales staff, and the studio business. The 'client' software is free - so for your recipient there's no charge, but running the server is expensive. They have a couple of models, including one called 'FASP,' that's similar to ftp in functionality, but much, much faster, secure and robust. It's also surprisingly agile- and will use as much bandwidth (up to the artificially imposed limit of the license) as it can get its hands on, and even fall back to ftp if that's all your firewall will allow. They even have a version than you can run as an instance of an amazon virtual machine (using AWS), and a newish 'cloud' service called 'aspera shares,' but at this point I don't think they have a 'single use' pay-per-use version yet. None of their offerings are geared toward the small businessman who doesn't employ an IT staff and have a sizeable IT budget. None. If you have a certain type of license, you clients can upload to your server, too, using the aspera software. We tried the AWS version, but it wasn't significantly faster for our purposes than other software, and the AWS useage was crazy expensive, even without adding the aspera license on top of that!

If you download from EPK.tv you're using Aspera- it's very easy to use from the client side- even has a little slider to control how much bandwidth you allow the system to use. (EPK.tv's version limits you to 45Mbs/per instance, but you can start multiple instances if you have the bandwidth.)

Good luck decoding their website.

If you are doing point-to-point transfer, rather than mass distribution, consider one of their competitors: we liked airship, which uses a similar, but also proprietary, approach to moving big data.

Looks like they've added even more support and variety since we looked at their products last year. Did work for us as we were looking for a one-to-many distribution system that didn't depend on our bandwidth for each recipient. Airship is ideal for linking remote parts of a production together. I can give you a direct contact if you're interested in what you see on their website. (They demoed at editor's lounge last year, which is how we met them.)

Another competitor is 'filecatalyst,' again, they've cooked up their own version of udp (or http?) transfer - you can try it out with their free 'whalemail' service (like yousendit) called www.files2u.com, and they'll also give you a trial license for their point-to-point software. They also use an artificially bandwidth-limited pricing structure, if I recall correctly. Their products are also evolving, too.
