We looked at a variety of solution over the last year and was very tempted
by the Cache-A route (for a small Post houses needs)
But we eventually went the StorageDNA route and an 8 tape library unit at
that.
It's a really clever bit of kit and has the fashionable LTFS which makes it
attractive for selling in to clients as they know any other LTFS LTO system
can access the tapes.
We stuck with LTO-5 and didn't go the LTO-6 route as we have a need for
some LTO-3 tape access and the extra cost of LTO-6 wasn't worth it for the
additional capacity.
For now we do complete drive dumps to it (hence the tape library so we can
leave it running over up to 8 tapes unattended) It's very very fast (1.1Gbps
I think the spec says)
And some neat features ike AAF Avid export to feed the media archive and the
option to feed an EDL to it to feed a restore process.
It's all web driven from the cleitn machine and very easy to setup and use.
But we are also working with CATDV as a MAM front end for it which will
extend the functionality even more.
