That's the gamble isn't it Rupert. Crystal ball mode needed.
Will an "open Source" driver still be supported in 20 years or will a
proprietary software package?
Early days for us but so far what we have has done all we've asked of it and
no issues to date.
Our main drive for going the LTFS route was fed from our clients (who pay
our wages at the end of the day)
Clients resisted the logical move back to tape as a long term Archive
solution mainly because they'd been through the mill of proprietary formats
and changes over the years.
LTFS has been getting good press as a solution to avoid being tied in to one
solution. Only time will tell if that's true and accurate but for many
clients they are long overdue for moving from hard drives as their Archive
and they have to make a tape choice and over the last 2 years or more our
Training and post experiences have led us to LTFS. As I said Cache-A being
the favoured solution for most clients but we felt StorageDNA had a better
direction.
Tell you what. In 20 years You bring a dozen tapes and so will I and let's
see who can get the most data back J
