I have switched to keyframing now in MC 5.5.

I say:

There might be some 'on-the-fly' audio conversions happening if
you're getting clicks at 'Add-Edit' points. In Settings/Audio Project/
Main/, are you "Convert{ing} Sample Rates When Playing"? Your system
may be short on resources to adequately do real-time dissolves,
especially if you are also converting sample rates in real time. Try
setting 'Convert Sample Rate When Playing' to 'Never' to see if it
makes a difference. You might also check to see if someone tampered
with the "Play Buffer Size" & "Tool Buffer Size" under Settings/
Audio. It's the lower-right box in the window. These reset to
nominal by clicking on the tiny 'rs' box. On my system, the nominal
level is 4096 samples for both. You might wish to increase these
buffer sizes to see if there's an improvement.
