It's very likely that you actually have a 10bit piece of media in your sequence(maybe a title or slate or bars).

The older version of Quicktime(I assume 7.x.x, since you mentioned Pro), that I understand you are using to look at your QTRef file, displays only the first codec from the sequence.

Try to open your QTRef with QT X and see if it displays the whole list of codecs used in the sequence, which in my guess will be 2: Avid MXF1:1 10bit, 720x486 and Avid MXF1:1, 720x486

I guess then I don't understand why when I make a QT ref fron an SD sequence that is 1:1 8bit That in QT pro it lists the codec as 1:1X when my sources are 8bit.
