software. I think this is new I don't remember hearing about this.
This would make the extra bucks for Avid hardware I/O more palatable
for some who need universal mastering and LTC output etc.... It also
says this release doesn't work with earlier hardware. Does this mean
an original Nitris DX will work, I would think so but better to ask now.
I respond:
I take this to mean that Avid can now be 'disconnected' from hardware
with a software choice. Enabling hardware disconnection allows other
applications like Resolve, AE, or even PhotoShop access to 3rd party
video hardware such as BMD's UntraStudio, Intensity, or DeckLink
(among other makers). I don't believe it extends to their own
hardware's use with other applications however. It might mean that DX
hardware can be disconnected from the Avid software with just a
click. This would allow operation of a Media Composer, Symphony, or
NewsCutter as software-only without having to shut down the
application, turning off the DX hardware, and then restarting the
application. The value of this ability with DX hardware is still very
limited, but could save time if you happen to need software-only
operation for, say full-screen viewing of sequences. It has more
value with 3rd party hardware as that can be used with other
applications.
When Avid is connected to any hardware, it precludes that hardware
from being used with other applications. Previously, you had to quit
the Avid application in order to use 3rd party video hardware with
another application. With this new 'switchable' capability, Avid can
continue to run (software-only) while the video hardware is used with
another application. This should save the editor some time.
