I'm not sure that really plays out in actual mass numbers. There's a lot of talk and some high-visibility migrations, but a lot of FCP7 folks are still on FCP7. Heck, I know plenty of folks on FCP6, still.

Plus the operative word is "back". Avid really hasn't done much to attract a new audience by updating the actual editing model. I know plenty of folks here love MC as is. Unfortunately Avid has been unsuccessful is selling something better. They tried with DS and botched the effort. Look how long many folks here have begged for improvements like shapes in color correction or a better effects module. When iMovie first came out with skimming, plenty of folks here mentioned they wished it were on MC. Now you have it on X and even in Premiere (hover scrubbing), but nothing in MC.

Despite the move to 64-bit and some open architecture, MC is simply not perceived as a modern NLE. File-based media management using AMA is a joke, once you try to work with it across several applications. It's pretty much only functional as an ingest method within the closed Avid world. Try to import projects from another NLE and reconnect media using AMA? Ha! 9 times out of 10 you will have no luck without a number of workarounds.

While that's sort of true, the reason he did that was dissatisfaction at the level of support Avid was able to provide when he had problem during the cut on "The Talented Mr. Ripley". That's what gave him reason to look. The app sold itself and I would have to agree.

My point in my comment is that Avid editors (and probably Avid, too) are complacent in what they perceive as the demise of FCP at the hands of FCP X. I think that perception is not only wrong but foolish. History has a funny way of repeating itself.
