Not worth it. I needed a NAS 6 months ago & thought about
re-purposing my old Terrablock or my old Unity LANshare. But after a
bit of research I bought a little NAS box (Netgear ReadyNAS) for under
$1000, stuffed it with six 3TB Hitachi Deskstars, and it's been
running like a champ. It's small, quiet, and simple to manage. Save
yourself the bother, just buy a NAS off the shelf.

I have old unitys that have served great cause of editing for many
years and are no longer covered by avid. I have to decommission them,
and I would like them to have a second life as intranet servers. But I
know that the Avid disks etc are non standard. So I was wondering how
to render these very useful boxes into simple SAN / NAS where I can
put off the shelf disks in, not the avid ones. Any thoughts are most
welcome.
