Okay a while back I posted about an upcoming Red project of a multicam nature. After testing of the Red One work flow the DIT suggested using Epic for availability of storage. After lots of help from the L I was able to convince the execs to stick with the Red One. Found out today they have shot the project and for reasons unknown to anyone they shot on the Epic cameras. I have no idea why but that's what we are stuck with. Production just decided to do what ever the hell they wanted and of course the DIT sold them on doing the transcodes to DNX 75 because he had a Red Rocket card and needed to pay for it. My tests for transcoding on multiple avid stations showed we could have done that but once again bang my head. After the first day of tests came in I'm told they had time code sync issues and the AE informed production. The response was the operator didn't really know the equipment so they were reading the manual and they would
correct the time code. Guess what, they didn't so they couldn't even get a reasonable lock on the time code. Okay enough of the problem I have a few questions about what we ended up with.
My understanding was the Epics would have external SSD drives so they could record the 90 minute show without stopping. According to the AE the dnx transcoded files from all the cameras run for 20 to 30 minutes ish and then there is a break. I don't understand how this could happen when there was plenty of storage space on the SSD's. at least that was what we were told when the originally suggested Epics over Red One. I realize there are various sizes of the external storage SSDs but I would have thought they would use drives that had enough capacity for the full show. Again I really don't know what they did but we ended up with 20 to 30 minute clips and the time code drifts between the various clips. Is there some record length limit to Epics shooting to external SSD drives? Or is there a time limit to transcoding clips to DNX using RecCineX with a Red Rocket Card?
I'm told that the dnx transcode do have a tape name but it's nothing that is very intuitive. I'm assuming that the transcodes done by the DIT took the file names and used them for the tape name. I'll have to talk more with the AE about what the tape names are. Is it safe to assume that the tape names came from the R3D file names? Are there any other options for adding the tape name during transcoding? I'll probably post these and other questions at RedUsers.com but I want to get feedback from my Avid bros first. TIA
