On 5.5.3, you have to bring in the .MTS files via a regular Import. If you
have long clips, like interviews, you have to bring in the WHOLE DAMN CLIP.
On 6.0, you should* be able to AMA to the AVCHD folder structure as a volume
or to individual .MTS files. From there, you can subclip and transcode just
what you want.
(* I see that your footage is Sony-made, and my experience is limited to
Panasonic.)
Clip-length aside, I have found that 6.0 does transcode more quickly than
5.5 imports. So, if you have 6.0 on another system, I think that it is
worth doing it there.
