That's a lot of steps and you still end up stepping in. I think this is more of a feature request, to be able to edit a new clip over an old one and keep all effects that are currently applied. No stepping in, no submaster, just load the clip into source monitor, possibly hold down a modifier key, and hit edit. Thats it.
