What version of MC/Symph are you on?
If it's Epic, you need to be on v6.
Adding Red is much different, as it records in R3D in Redspace, and this needs to be converted to Rec709 for you to work with. Usually, this is done by using color presets that are added on set, and which the AMA R3D plugin will detect and used in the color space conversion.
If you're not on v6 and need to work with Red, convert the Red files to Avid media using RedCine-X (or MetaFuze, or Resolve).
Then there's the fact that these shots need to be Debayered, and this can happen at several quality levels. If you intend to use it for HD finish, you'll want to use Half Good or higher Debayer settings. The higher the Debayer setting, the longer the transcode will take. In Avid, the Media Creation tool has a setting for the R3D Debayer quality.
If you really want to know how this works, you may want to watch this video:

It's about an older version of MC, but still, it has a lot of relevant information.
