I'm here with Ted from RED in Brooklyn and asked him whether the EPIC has been tested with extremely long takes and he says it will work no problem. You will need a 256GB SSD drive (512GB SSD drives are coming soon) and figure out the compression you will need to fit on your drive (you will most likely need to set the compression to at least 12:1, which looks great projected in 4K). The Epic's and Scarlett's now use a ratio to express compression, only the RED ONE uses the REDCODE 42,36,28 which is like 7:1, 9:1 and 12:1-sort of like when Avid went from AVR'S (remember those) to compression ratio's. The heat issue was more of a problem with the original RED ONE camera. For a 1920x1080 HD finish you can shoot in 4K HD mode (Quad HD) and it will look great and the math works out very nicely. You can set up how the fans kick on or not in the camera menu settings. Of course on the post side it will get very interesting when you have 45 or more spanned R3D files which represent your extremely long take.
