If you Right-Click in the Effect Editor there is a selection that will let you make the text fractionally larger.
Numeric keypad entry is supposed to work. Check the usual suspects: User settings and MCState file. If that doesn't fix it, you can also nudge the sliders using the trim keys on the keyboard (M, comma, period, slash).
