Agreed. The only reason I can think of is if you have a HDMI output like a
DSLR and your other gear is BNC in. HDMI gear tends to be a bit cheaper I
guess due to professional gear having to meet the SMPTE HDSDI spec.
Lou I just thought of one other thing. Due to the extra step of transcoding
you could introduce latency between the camera and recorder. Not a big deal
unless you are using the HDSDI out from the recorder to feed video assist
monitors. In that case you could introduce lip flap between the live
performances on set vs. what you see on the monitors. I've seen it happen.
Just try explaining that one to a perplexed DP and Director. Not fun...
