Once you have a shape if you click on the outline/path button on the bottom of the effects window just to the right of the render button the color of the shape border line changes from white to light blue. The downside is the actual effect disappears and you just see the outline but when the white line disappears from a image color it can help. I do agree there ought to be a way to change the color to help out in those situations.
