it's either 960x720 or 1440x1080. Downconverting from 720, you lose 240
lines of resolution- downconverting from 1080, you lose 600 lines of
resolution. An accurately sampled 480 lines with no downconvert will almost
always look better (the noticeable part being perceived sharpness) than a
center-cut extracted and downconverted HD signal.
It's in the same vein as my discontent at DPs who shoot 4K for an HD spot.
So much loss of resolution just looks worse than if they shot it at native
res to begin with.
Bear in mind, I am *not* talking about dual delivery, future-proofing, OR
shooting large area to have the flexibility for non-enlarging repos. Those
are, to me, the only reasons to shoot at higher res than intended delivery.
If I knew I was delivering SD (and only SD), it would be my preference to
shoot SD. Even the best downconverts (Teranex, Alchemist, etc.) suck
compared to no downconvert.
