Hello everyone,
I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet, so I thought I would share my experience with you. Last night I was mixing down a 90-minute show for ESPN (A1/A2 Stereo Pgm, A3/A4 mix minus v/o) and this AM my producer discovered occasional errors in the mixdown.
Our announcer voices some segments after-the-fact and emails us MP3 files which are imported. In a few places, PART of his audio was missing from the audio mixdown. It would pick up after a bit, but it was always the start of the edited clip that was missing, and always JUST the mp3 file.
So, I called it in to Avid and logged a case number. In the meantime, you can try to recreate the issue if you so desire.
1) Create a 720p/59.97 project.
2) Import an mp3
3) Edit about 6 seconds of the audio file into a new timeline.
4) Stretch the timeline out so that it is 18 seconds, either by adding non-mp3 audio like AIFF or captured sound from tape.
5) Do a stereo audio mixdown. You should see that everything works as expected.
6) Now make the timeline 30 seconds and do a new mixdown. You should see that the MP3 drops out of the mixdown for about the first 3.5 seconds.
It's always possible that this is operator error, but I think not. I was able to recreate the problem on both a Mac and PC running Media Composer software version 6.0.
Your feedback is welcome.
This is a pretty big deal for us, because we generally trust the mixdown to be the same as the component parts... and since it's one of the last steps in our process, the critical listening has normally already happened by the time we get to mixdowns. This bug means we will have to scrutinize each V/O insert carefully to ensure inclusion.
