I think:
If you export a Reference Movie, you can get direct channels out. Of
course, ref movies are only useful on the same computer where they
originated.
I get around all this trouble by exporting separate audio-only QTs,
labeled by tracks. You can do two tracks at a time, so I export
tracks 1-2, then 3-4, etc. As long as the lengths are identical, they
can then be used elsewhere as needed. Obviously you can't play them
as a single QT, but this method is useful to quickly export multiple
tracks for use in say, making a DVD or Blu-ray with 5.1 audio, for
example.

DX box or etc? I can see that for monitoring but certainly not for
export.
I answer:
It won't affect the export, no. The problem is that Avid will not
export self-contained multi-track QTs. Stereo, yes. Mono, yes.
Multi-track, no.
It is true that you will not get the DIRECT output choice if you
don't have capable hardware attached. That doesn't affect the export
capabilities, but it is still annoying.
