I have a late 2006 17" MBP (2.33ghz dual core) that's on I believe its 4th battery - the last two having not only failed just after that magic 300 cycle mark, they also expanded so much they tore the housing apart. Another one of those things you discover is quite common after a quick Google search.
Of all the laptops from various manufacturers I've had over the years, that's the only one that's actually been hazardous.
Still works though - and it's great in the Winter.
