[Avid-L2] Re: Lt,Rt vs. Lo,Ro vs. Stereo L&R

FYI for all - matrix encoding (Pro Logic / Pro Logic II) is most definitely still used in production. I also guarantee that the bulk of programming that is still delivered in two channel is matrix encoded as well, including many commercials. It's still a very viable way to get some surround information passed through to consumer receivers, especially given the fact that many consumers are not savvy enough to set up their receivers for discrete surround.

Also, many promos and commercials that are mixed for stereo are processed in some way through the matrix encoders so that we'll know what the end product will sound like when the end user leaves his receiver set to decode.

Back to the OP - you are correct about the labeling. However, I am suspect about the reasons why they wouldn't have accepted "Stereo" as a label since that is more accurate than either of the other two...

I've been told that because there is not dolby phase matrixing for the older dolby pro logic Lo,Ro is correct as in Left only and Right only. I still watch TV at home with my dolby pro logic receiver and it still works on prime time episodics and others so I believe it is still in use. I do agree stereo left and right is accurate but they want Lo,Ro and that's what they are going to get. If you ask me it's much to do about nothing but then they receive many different audio configurations depending on the requirements of a particular show and at least this way it will be consistent with the others and their cataloging of assests.
