We also started out on the cheaper StarTechs and had nothing but problems with our Windows 7 monitors. Even tried a pair of EDID emulators to fool the OS without luck.
We've since gone to Aten CS1642s which have worked really well. Mind you, this is between 2 PCs and not a Mac so your mileage may vary.

I've seen a pair of Geffen KVM's work out nicely- one for each side, hook 'em up the same way, then use the remote to switch both at the same time.
