A couple of questions and a possible workaround...
- What are your Import settings? Specifically when you click Options in the
Import dialog and navigate to the Image tab are you using Computer/RGB
(0-255) as your levels?
- When you AMA transcode and it crashes what are you transcoding to? (It
shouldn't make a difference, but I want to try and reproduce your
situation.)
You shouldn't have to do this, and test it with a smaller file first to make
sure the levels hold, but try using MPEG Streamclip to create a DNxHD
encoded QuickTime file. That should import quickly and correctly (or give
good AMA performance).

If you want to donate to Red Cross quake relief, you can do so through your cell phone. Text redcross to 90999 to make a $10 donation. It will be on your next cell bill.
