FCP X has landed.....
CoreMelt & FCP X
Apple released their latest version of Final Cut Pro on 22 June; Final Cut Pro X.
There's a lot of great new features, and we are investigating the best way of adding support for our current and future products.
Unfortunately, Apple choose not to give us any information about plugin support in FCP X prior to it's release today (22/6/11). We would like to support FCP X as quickly as possible, but until we have examined the work involved in detail we are unable to commit to any timescale for FCP X support.
We apologize for this situation which was beyond our control and not at all ideal to both us and to you, our valued customers.
However, let's be blunt, if you are a professional editor that works with R3D or other RAW formats, tape based ingest, has a hardware I/O board (BlackMagic, Kona or Matrox) or needs XML to work with RedCine X or to import from other editors, then FCP X is not yet for you. I suggest you read these article's on Creative Cow which lays out the many areas of FCP X that still need developing:
Ready or Not Article on Creative CowWhats Missing article on Creative Cow
FCP X: Ready or not here it comes FCP X: What's missing for some pros
You also need to check your graphics card carefully before upgrading as you need to have a card that supports OpenCL with 256MB of VRAM. See this Apple knowledge base note.
apple_logo.jpgKB on Unsupported Graphics cards for FCP X
If your card is on the list linked above you cannot run FCP X and can only continue to run FCP 7.0.3
I can make the following commitment on behalf of CoreMelt, by the time FCP X is ready for the professional editor, we will support it to the best of our ability.
In the meantime, it is possible (but not recommended) to run both FCP 7 and FCP X on the same hard drive. This way you can still access all your CoreMelt plugins from within FCP 7. Please see this Apple knowledge base article for details.

Will work when LION releases, in case you've contemplated the upcoming operating system impact on your editing capabilities. I called Apple directly to receive an answer after speaking with two representations and 14 minutes.
As for Media 100, for those jumping the Apple ship, they may be offering a discount to persons leaving Apple behind. BUT, I was told to check back in a few days. So, don't go running to spend your $995 just yet. I received this information directly from them.

FCP Studio has been discontinued as of June 21.
Color and DVD Studio Pro are gone from the looks of it.

Thanks for everyone's input on this.
Does anyone know if Apple is going to keep selling the "old" version of FCP for a while along with the new FCP X or is the last pre-X version history and we are stuck with the latest version for new installs?
Thanks

From what little I've been able to glean so far, you do NOT want your old FCP and the FCPO X on the same platform/drive/harddrive. If you must have both, I think keeping them separated/partitioned is the best. To add an additional level of paranoia about going between the two, I would completely quit out of one before opening the other.. Perhaps even a restart, to be safe. (Remember the days when we had both OS 9 and the new OS 10 systems on, and to go back & forth between the two? Restarting is safest...

I've been reading all comments and feedbacks about FCPX. And now I want to try it myself to have my own opinion. But I am not sure what happens to FCP7 on my computer if I download FCPX. Would it overwrite it? Or would I have both versions?
Thank you very much in advance to anyone who could answer my question,

My two cents from what I have been reading: FCPX has some pretty cool new features but there is way too much that is missing for it to be viable for use by professional editors… even, in some cases, single-system one-man band freelancers.
No EDL, XML, or OMF is a major dealbreaker for me as, even on my one-man-band projects, I often send sequences to After Effects or Color. The fact that they killed Color and then gave no way to go to any other external color grading application because they figure that those dots (I don't see how high-end color grading can be done with those dots for the life of me) are good enough for any colorist is mind boggling to me.
No separate sequences would severely complicate the workflow for the TV show I work on every week, as we divide it up into segments and I give each segment its own sequence. I can't imagine having to go through one big sequence and individually mark each segment in and out, that would be insanely time-consuming.
The fact that FCPX insists on dumping projects and media all over your internal hard drive with the way to get projects organized on an external drive extremely complicated is another major dealbreaker for me, and it makes me wonder about something I haven't even heard anyone else bring up: how is a school supposed to use this program? When I was in school I rarely ever worked on a project on the same workstation twice. What would I have done if the editing software had insisted on using the internal drive? The barriers Apple has put up in this program with regard to project portability will be a major dealbreaker with most schools also, project portability is a must in that kind of environment.
I could go on but most of this has already been said. I really have to wonder if Apple actually consulted with any professional editors when making this new version of FCP. Me, I'll install X on a separate partition so I can learn it cause I know I'll need to know it at some point, but for my work I'm sticking with FCP7 and Premiere Pro (which I use at the TV station I work at), hoping Apple either adds the features professionals need to future versions of X or acknowledges it as a New Coke and kills it off following a rollout of Final Cut Studio Classic 4 (featuring Final Cut Pro Classic 8, Motion 5, Color 2.0, Soundtrack Pro 4, Compressor 5, and introducing Blu-Ray Studio Pro, yeah that's right). If not, I will be a full-time Premiere Pro editor once support for FCP7 stops.

My coworker just brought in an interesting article that has an A.C.E.
survey showing that Final Cut's market share (at least in that group)
is down to 12% from 18% a year or two ago...and the highest they ever
got was 21%.
Just thought that was some interesting data to share.
