We've learned to take the family to the AMC 8 at the Burbank mall. The
screens are smaller but not too small and there is no 3D so you can get the
2D version which is often not offered at all at the 16. Also we've
restricted our movie-going to weekend mornings. The tickets are $6.50
before noon, so the family outing is a movie and lunch rather than dinner
and a movie.
A nearby restaurant once had a newspaper clipping taped to their counter of
an interview with the president of AMC saying that if you wanted to eat
something at the movie that they didn't sell at the theater, you were
welcome to bring it yourself. Once while waiting for the movie to start we
got a craving for ice cream, and jumped up and ran to the Ben and Jerry's
next door. The only other couple in the theater saw us return with our
sundaes, and dashed out to get their own. AMC doesn't seem to be so laid
back about it anymore however.
I was given a pack of trading cards Pixar sends out with the hard drives for
projectionists. On the backs were tips and technical advice, and a notice
that folks from Pixar would be visiting theaters around the country and
handing out prizes to projectionists found to be running the film with
optimal image and sound. I don't know if it made any difference, but at
least they make an effort to get their films shown in the best light.

Bingo, same theater. And 4 bucks per ticket means 16 bucks when I take the
family.
There is an actual formula for screen size to viewing distance. Just making
screens bigger doesn't enhance the experience. If you want that inability to
take it all in, then sit in the front row at the Cineramadome.
This blatant theft really peeves me. The letter to the CEO is already in the
mail.

the AMC theater chain's new money grabbing scheme. They have what they call
the "Enhanced Theater Experience" which actually means they are charging you
4 dollars more per ticket. What do you get for that? According to their
press release:

projection and an upgraded sound system. "

farther away, but these are existing cracker box theaters so that isn't
going to happen. And the "upgraded sound system" is twice as many speakers
with higher wattage. In other words, either their sound systems were already
sub par, or they will now make sure you leave the theater deaf.
