You are correct, but I don't think that's true any longer. The issue is that now the "helper" apps are an optional/custom installation choice in the MC installer. This implies that you can run an older version of these apps along with a newer version of MC. That may be where the problem lies.

With the current installer, if you select the custom install and pick the desired helper apps, it all installs at one time and there doesn't seem to be an issue. So as John said, uninstall it all, then follow a custom install from the patch. This is a full installation in the Mac versions.
