editors are pretty wary now. The "FCP is going prosumer" rumour had such
traction, I think, because it was something that seemed somewhat plausible.
FCP editors I know are getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of
forward progress from a company that used to be very innovative and
responsive to new challenges. Avid caught flack from FCP editors for the
time it took to get decent HDV support, but now FCP editors are having to
struggle through imports or long renders to deal with EX, Canon and other
media, even with a new .0 version of FCP shipping recently.
And FCP 7.0 seemed to compound that frustration (which was there before 7,
and is much louder since it shipped) when it didn't really offer many
substanital improvements or new features.
Going by FCP's previous development cycle I think it's supposed to be 12-18
months before we'd expect a new release, during which time it seems Avid
will be making drastic leaps forward.
I think if Avid's third-party hardware openess does develop into full I/O
support for AJA and Blackmagic cards then we could certainly see a lot more
Avid installations alongside, or possibly in place of, Final Cut. As it is,
I think the changes in MC5 are probably enough to have a lot of FCP editors
paying a lot more attention, at the very least.
How significant is it that the major presentation at the 10th Anniversary
meeting of LAFCPUG will be a demonstation of Media Composer 5?
But the industry is a lumbering beast, so even if this release does create
some sort of turning point back toward Avid for the segments that have
drifted to FCP over the years it could take quite some time to actually see
that change happen in a noticable way.
