And I think version 4 was the one that began to rely more on the GPU
so maybe an upgrade is in order, then a review of performance?

D: All of the above.

Seriously, Avid uses the CPU and GPU to handle the timeline now. So
the more horsepower you have, the more performance you get.

Drive throughput can also cause hangs, but you can test that with
AJA's free system test application.
