I've seen this on projects as well. Here's the response I got from Avid support when I asked about it.
"These files are a known issue and something that's being addressed here by engineering. It can be fixed by accessing the files from a PC and deleting them or using a 3rd party tool on the Mac side called Blue Harvest, which will delete these files."
I haven't had a chance to try the Blue Harvest app yet, but from what I've read on the Community forums, it seems to work.
