[Avid-L2] Re: ScriptSync & v5

When I first heard of this business decision, I hit the ' effing ROOF - I stormed out of my edit room and said WTF loud enough and with enough force to make the the NOVA interns blush and flee on urgent errands - papers trailing - to parts unknown to the foundation before that day.

I unfortunately (due to a bout of dyslexia - a disability that Title Tool taunts me every day with) read it wrong. I read that Script Sync was not part of the upgrade, but an extra license. Marianna (God bless her everyday) set me straight and I calmed down. And I think so should all the "Users" here on the L. You have a license, you upgrade, you get full bore Script Sync. We are all set - for now.

Ok now having said that.

WTbloodyF???? Hard to sell? Give me a break!

I was giving a lecture at the Banff World Television conference (I forget the name now) to about 200 people. Talking about Images systems and Sound design Etc. The theater was full of people. Near the end, the question came up why do I like Avid better than FCP. I get this a lot and Mr. Frank has helped me (with severe and constant abuse - something about my knuckles dragging) - not to just laugh and make a derisive flippant comment that involves the word "toy," and instead show how and why.

So this is what I do.

Me: the Avid has tools that I use everyday that FCP can not compete with.
Them: (incredulous) like what?
Me: well among the many professional (oops sorry frank) um make that many tools that are not in FCP is Script, or Transcript integration with the media in a bin. Yes, I think that is probably the best example.
Them: huh?
Me: Here let me show you. (I call up a transcript.) this is a comprehensive interview with someone talking about Don Rumfeld and the Iraq war. Please anyone in the room say a phrase you would hope this person would say as part of a historical story. (Now the room laughs)
Me: now this is serious, think like a documentary and you want to tell a story, what would be a good, but serious part you may want to hear?
Audience gets sheepish, but some brave soul says something. I type command F, type it in and double click. and BOOM it plays, Another, and boom it plays. Another, EVERY BLOODY TIME IT PLAYS. EVERY BLOODY TIME!!!

And the crowd give me a Houdini-like applause. then for my final take home point I show how to make a blow-hard pol, who never stops taking, end a sentence where I want him to end; by finding the same word with a period instead of a comma.

With that, I have converted whole room of people. It works and it works every time

Hared to sell my a** (ok frank yes, sorry) my behind.

But the fact is MOST people don't use script sync. (Their error not Avid's) the price is high for new users, I admit that, but it is fundamentally a business decision, will using script sync save me more than a grand in the edit room - no question - it definitely will. But I agree, not having it in the box to show off it will never sell. As a concept it is too hard to believe that it works as well as advertised.

Let's just pray that it does not go the way of Illusion, Matador and Elastic Reality. If those were still in the box today, I would not be buying CS5. Maybe Avid should consider that business decision before Adobe puts scripting in Premier.

SMA
