[Avid-L2] not seeing deck output

I'm trying to capture video from a Panasonic AJ-HD1400 deck DVCProHD; The video was shot on tape with a Panasonic HVX200 camera.  I can select the AJ-HD1400 deck in the capture tool and Avid will control it but I can not see or hear anything from the deck.  I can see the video on an external monitor direct from the deck, but not thru Avid.  Are there perhaps any setting I need to check ?  I am bringing the deck in via FW400 with a FW800 adapter on the laptop end and going to a G -Raid mini drive via E-Sata and a Cal Digit Express Card.
