[Avid-L2] 4 core an option for Avid MC 4 and 5?

Hi everyone

I'm helping an editor go from PC to Mac for his editing platform which will ideally be both Avid and FCP.

I'm presuming that a dual boot system is best for different QuickTimes/installed codecs etc, and NVIDIA rather than ATI for graphics, but crucially I'm trying to find out if it's OK/wise to only go for a single quad core machine rather than dual in the hope of saving some money.

Looking at the specs for supported hardware it doesn't look like single CPU/quad core architecture is approved by Avid on Mac Pros, but the top of the line iMac i7 is supported (a single quad core chip) so I'm a little confused.

Is anyone out there editing on MC 4 or 5 with such a machine and if so, any real downers in terms of performance?

BTW, this would really just be an offline machine, tho I imagine offlining at DNxHD might be a strong possibility in the future.

Thanks for any pointers.
