Much like print and many other industries there was a period of time when the skills needed to make TV and the cost of equipment ensured those with the skills or the kit could make more than just a living from the work. Many made a right royal living.
But like all things the tools have become simpler, the cost of those tools has dropped to the level that just about anyone can afford them and the quality viewers will accept has dropped to an all time low.
The quality of "TV" and content being spewed through the TV post industry is lower than it's ever been and will most likely go even lower.
3D was never going to be an industry "saver" any more than HD was.
It will however allow those prepared to do the leg work in working it out and how to achieve the best from the tools available a chance to make a living. Not get rich but get paid for the work and effort they put in.
The industry is far past saving. It's just what it is.
3D maybe a fad, it may be emperors clothes or whatever but if customers want it, and at least some of the content can be made in a way that enhances it by using 3D then we'll be part of that.
The games changing adapt or leave...
