I had this happen to me recently. Here's what I did ;
- try connecting to another monitor by DVI port ; in my case the result was nothing
- try booting off OS installer CD to rule out system software issue ; in my case the result was nothing
- zap PRAM (cmd-opt-p-r during startup letting it chime 8 times) since I've seen that clear up strange things ; in my case the result was nothing
- used the keyboard shortcut (T) to boot it in target disk mode while it was connected to another Mac via firewire ; in my case the result was that the laptop's hard drive showed up on that machine and seemed to function fine (both Mac and WIN bootcamp volumes fine)
- backed up important files while I had access to the laptop drive while booted in target disk mode
- brought it to the Apple store since it was still under warranty ; result, they said my graphics card seemed to be dead, and replaced the motherboard/graphics card
I was without the laptop for a few days while it was repaired... It made me wonder if regularly connecting a monitor to the DVI port (which I do at least 2x a day) makes the machine more likely to suffer such a catastrophe...
